Founded in 1997, SOWER has over 28 years of continuous service dedicated to the empowerment, protection, and socio-economic advancement of women, youth, and vulnerable communities in rural Tamil Nadu. The organization initially began by organizing Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Viriyur and nearby villages. Over time, it expanded its services to include health, livelihood, education, agricultural development, youth empowerment, and rights-based initiatives.
SOWER primarily works in the villages of Viriyur, Palayanur, Sellagakuppam, Varakur, Thimmananthal, Arasarampattu, Arur, Kidankudaiyanpattu, Valayampattu, and Ramarajapuram, serving marginalized families, women-led households, farmers, youth, and rural labour groups.
The organization is recognized for conducting welfare programmes for elderly and destitute women, providing medical assistance, nutrition support, clothing, and counselling. It has extensive experience in implementing awareness and community development initiatives focusing on women’s empowerment, child protection, farmer development, health and hygiene, HIV/AIDS awareness, and livelihood generation.
SOWER consistently collaborates with Central and State Welfare Boards for Awareness Generation Programmes (AGP), Rural Awareness Programmes (RAP), and Creche Programmes, demonstrating its credibility and governance capacity. With a strong grassroots presence, SOWER continues to work with dedication toward inclusive and sustainable rural development.
